Real Estate Agents sole purpose is to buy and sell property. They specialize in the laws and requirements that allows people to transfer titles of ownership, and do all the work behind the scenes. When an agents sell a home, they normally are the ones to find a buyer using whatever marketing techniques they, and the sellers, agree on using. They schedule the walk throughs, the meetings, and do everything they can to close the deal with little hassle or time wasted by the owners.
But some owners may not need this. While sometimes it is a large commitment of time and stress, the reward of saving a few thousand dollars is worth the effort. But before you fire your agent and pick up the reins, understand that it takes a lot of knowledge to sell a house, and it can be extremely valuable to have that knowledge on your side of a contract.
